Car Rental in Spain: What’s important to know?

The Spanish car rental market is one of the most competitive in the world. With an emphasis on tourists, the first low-cost car rental companies were born in Spain. Spain also has the greatest number of competing rental companies, with low-cost, medium, and premium options. The result is that there are many options, good prices, but also a lot of complexity with renting a car. The additional charges that show up at the counter when picking up a car, the credit card blocks, and fuel policies make it difficult to be able to compare prices of each company. For this reason, we at MyTripCar have developed a comparison website that gives you all of this important information. Additionally, we have developed complete guides so you will know all of the important car rental information in each major destination in Spain.

Car rental guides, by destination

If you want to know complete details about how to rent a car in a certain destination, we have created guides about the regions that receive the most amount of tourists like Alicante, Mallorca, Málaga, Ibiza, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Tenerife. We also have specific guides for cities where business trips are as important as tourism, like Madrid and Barcelona, seguidas de Valencia, Bilbao and Sevilla. And we have guides for other destinations such as Gerona, Granada, Menorca, Murcia and Santander.

Number of available rental cars in Spain

In Spain, rental car companies all together have 253,000 car ready to rent in 2016, especially during the summer. A part of this fleet is directed towards the professional market (vans, small trucks), but the majority of a car rental’s fleet is focused on the tourist market.

Pick up in one office and return in another: the OneWay in Spain

The number of offices that make up each company is an important fact because a majority of the car rental offices that distribute cars throughout Spain allow travelers the flexibility of picking up a car in one office and returning it to a different office of the same company. The cost of this service, called OneWay, is higher (between 30 to 120 euros extra), but in many cases it’s the best option and worth it to consider. For example, it’s a relatively frequent occurrence that travelers pick up a car in Madrid and return it in Barcelona. Making a OneWay trip to a different country even with the same business is not possible, due to logistics. Car rental companies have arranged their fleets at a national level. Also due to logistics, it’s not possible to complete a OneWay between the peninsula and the islands (Balearic and Canary).
